Joshua J. Kain M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Kain is a board-certified head & neck oncology, microvascular reconstructive, skull base, and robotic surgeon.

Growing up, Dr. Kain developed a deep fondness and heart for Texas and all it has to offer, namely its people. He grew up in Richardson, Texas with his entrepreneurial parents who cultivated a strong work ethic wheter working in their residential construction business or the family ranch. This instilled a passion for creativity, design, and an appreciation for results that played directly into a natural love for surgery.

Dr. Kain attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where he graduated with summa cum laude honors in biomedical sciences.

He completed medical school at the John P. & Katherine G. McGovern Medical School (formerly the University of Texas-Houston Medical School) with distinctions in his studies of gross anatomy, developmental anatomy, and neuroscience. In the senior year, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society for academic achievements.

He completed an internship in General Surgery and residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ENT) at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, the flagship medical institution and trauma center for the state and region. In this bustling 1100 bed tertiary care center, his medical and surgical skills were refined with gradual autonomy that prepared him for clinical practice and sub-specialty care.

Through the American Head & Neck Society match, he was selected for a fellowship in Head & Neck Surgery & Microvascular Reconstruction at the University of California-Davis in Sacramento, California. This formative fellowship training provided him with advanced-practice skills in the fields of surgical oncology, microvascular reconstructive surgery, robotic surgery, skull base surgery, and maxillofacial trauma surgery.

After training, Dr. Kain and his young family moved to Texas joining the Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery under the leadership of chairman Mas Takashima, M.D. He held academic appointments through the Weill-Cornell Medical College, Houston Methodist Academic Institute, Houston Methodist Research Institute, and Texas A&M College of Medicine as an educator to residents, fellows, and medical students.

In 2024, Dr. Kain and his family relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina in a joint appointment with Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Associates and the Levine Cancer Institute. This move brought them closer to family and gave their kids the opportunity to grow up with close cousins and friends while getting to enjoy a common love as a family- the great outdoors. Dr. Kain joined the Department of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology, Head & Neck Surgery Section to provide comprehensive head and neck cancer care through a multidisciplinary team at the Levine Cancer Institute.

His practice includes the breadth of oncologic and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck. This includes fruitful and frequent collaborations with colleagues from radiation oncology, medical oncology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and ophthalmologic surgery. He is board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ABOHNS).
